World War II required the United States to do something unprecedented: feed millions of soldiers scattered across the globe. But food is never just fuel. What soldiers ate, what they expected to eat, and what they complained about can tell us a surprising amount about American culture.


This talk explores the rise of mass consumer culture through the lens of military rations during World War II. As the military rapidly expanded, it faced a challenge that remains familiar today: how do you satisfy millions of individuals while serving everyone the same meal? Soldiers often grumbled about their food, but those complaints were not always about taste. They were also about identity, expectations, and what Americans believed they deserved.
